Alaska needs reduced oil taxes even more than industry does.
The problem
is that, without tax relief, North Slope production will continue its nosedive
and tax revenues will sooner or later be too low to cover the state’s outsize
spending habits.
That would require Alaska’s political leaders to choose
between slashing the state budget to something affordable with drastically lower
revenues and cracking the state’s piggy banks.
