Testing, testing: Will emergency alert work simultaneously nationwide?

Fairbanks residents, like those across the nation, have heard the standard emergency alerts from their local radio and TV for years. On Wednesday morning, they’ll hear something similar, but the alert is supposed to occur simultaneously across the nation.

The alert is planned for 10 a.m. in Alaska, which is 2 p.m. Eastern time. If the test works, it will be a significant achievement, but the agencies coordinating the event seemed to be cautious about the chances of universal success.
