Surprise! A large chunk of our state’s $49 billion economy depends on oil and
gas, which made up about 25 percent of Alaska’s Gross Domestic Product last
year.
All of that is even more amazing when you consider that the oil and
gas industry’s direct employment here accounts for about only 4 percent of the
total employment in the state, the state Labor Department says. That gives
Alaska the highest per capita GDP in the nation, at $63,424, about 50 percent
more than the U.S. average, the Anchorage Daily News reported.
