Increasing
the residential property tax exemption to $50,000 from $20,000 would have
unintended results for low-income residents, municipal assessor Marty McGee told
the Assembly during a work session Friday.
The increase
would originate in a state Senate bill, but the Assembly is scheduled to vote on
an ordinance Feb. 2 that would set an advisory vote on whether Anchorage
residents support the increase. While Assemblywoman Elvi Gray-Jackson said the
increase would be intended to provide increased tax relief to residents, McGee
said the increase would only shift the burden to other residents.LINK
