Residents, officials question code enforcement

FAIRBANKS — Ever since a handful of protestors set up camp at the Veteran’s Memorial Park — in violation of rules barring camping in borough parks — many people, including borough assemblymembers, have asked why hasn’t the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly done anything about it.

Simply put, that’s because the borough doesn’t enforce most of its code. It’s a problem that’s rooted in nearly two decades of clashes about the borough’s junkyard enforcement.

The borough’s colorful history of code enforcment was presented to the Borough Assembly by borough attorney Rene Broker at its work session meeting Thursday night to answer questions about why the tents haven’t moved.
