Four months
after Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan formed a team to deal with the city’s
homeless issue, Darrel Hess, the group’s coordinator, says it has formulated a
multiprong plan to combat the problem.
Anchorage’s homeless, specifically chronic drunks, cost the city about $4 million annually in police, fire and community service patrol costs, Hess said. The team has formulated a plan combining involuntary treatment, housing and winter shelters to mitigate the cost.
