WAYS TO IMPROVE THE ECONOMY

If I was President of the United States (which I can’t ever be, having been born in another country) I would issue a few direct orders to members of my cabinet, targeting specific job growth potentials.

FIRST: Order the NLRB to rescind its lawsuit against Boeing for building an aircraft plant in South Carolina. This would enable Boeing to complete the job (thousands of jobs involved) and then open the plant, creating 2,000 plus new manufacturing jobs in South Carolina. The 4x multiplier effect (each new production job generates 4 supporting services jobs) would result in 10,000 jobs.

SECOND: Approve and issue the necessary permits to TransCanada to build the desired oil pipeline from Alberta to Texas. Construction generates 20,000 jobs, making 100,000 while building. Once completed, ongoing operations involve some 2,500 direct jobs (12,500 indirect) and provide lower-cost energy supplies.

THIRD: Order Secretary Salazar to immediately issue pending drilling permits in the Gulf of Mexico, with a minimum issue of at least 10 each month until all requested permits have been issued. The freeze following the gulf oil spill resulted in a lost of over 120,000 petroleum industry jobs, making another 480,000 indirect jobs in the Gulf states from Florida to Texas. This also increases domestic oil production, resulting in a decrease of dollars flowing to foreign producers/countries.

FOURTH: Order Secretary Salazar to immediately issue pending drilling permits to Shell Oil to initiate drilling in the Arctic Ocean. Jobs impact perhaps 2,000, with an increase in the flow of oil down the Alaska pipeline of a potential doubling, resulting both in increased domestic oil production and preservation of the critical Alaska oil pipeline operation and its attendant jobs.

FIFTH: Eliminate the Sacramental smelt from the endangered species list and restore the flow of water to the California Central Valley. This would change Central Valley unemployment from 40% to perhaps 4%, while supplying once more to all of the United States critically needed vegetables and fruits, rather than sending dollars abroad for foods.

SIXTH: Eliminate the ethanol corn subsidy. Farmers would continue to grow corn, but the crop would go to food stocks for animals, resulting in lower costs for meats, dairy and eggs, and increased stocks for export to other nations, resulting in strengthening the US dollar.

SEVENTH: Order approval of permits for drilling in the Atlantic off the state of Virginia, and in the Pacific in the Santa Barbara Channel. The Virginia drilling will produce roughly 2,000 direct petroleum jobs, while increase domestic oil supplies and reducing outflow of US dollars. The Santa Barbara Channel drilling will produce roughly 2,000 direct petroleum jobs, increase domestic oil supplies, reduce transportation costs of raw materials of California refineries, reduce outflow of US dollars, and significantly reduce the continuous seepage of raw oil off Gaviota, an oil seepage that has polluted the Santa Barbara Channel shores for over 10,000 years.

EIGHTH: Order the EPA to eliminate all consideration of any new regulations impacting the mining and useage of coal in the United States. This will preserve 49% of US electrical production and all the jobs directly and indirectly associated with that production, while preserving over 100,000 coal mining jobs, and related transportation jobs in trucking and rail, hauling said coal to power plants. This will also preserve oil products for higher end uses from medicines to clothing to pharmaceuticals to construction materials, rather than diverting to oil power plants to make up for the lack of coal.

NINTH: Order the approval of requested permits for new nuclear power plants. This will enable several years of high-pay construction jobs for thousands in different parts of the country, and then subsequently will provide energy substituting for oil power plants, and providing direct support substitutions for wind power’s “down time”. And while you’re at it re-permit Yucca Mountain as a totally safe storage facility for spent nuclear fuels instead of far more dangerously storing them at each individual nuclear power plant.

TENTH: Order the relevant departments to allow for the restart of logging in our national forests and federal lands. This will generate American logging jobs, American transport jobs, and lower costs of construction of American homes, businesses and public facilities, causing in turn an upturn in the overall construction industry.

AND LAST: I’d ask Congress to rewrite the tax code to eliminate the double-tax penalty on US corporation earnings made abroad, so that they would be encourage to bring those dollars home for investment instead of reinvesting abroad.

Perhaps most basically of all, it would greatly assist in the creation of any number of different types of new jobs if the federal government would sensibly, politely, and immediately stop obstructing good, sound, reasonable American projects of all types. Ah, if only I could be President for a day!
