Energy costs and air quality interact: Fairbanks must be cautious about controls

Fifty years ago, the midwinter air in Fairbanks looked like that produced by a summer forest fire because of wood and coal burning. Eventually, fuel oil became reasonably priced, and so, for 50 years, construction expertise, our growing economy and stable energy costs led to more and larger homes.
